Thank you for allowing me to introduce you to the vision that has now resulted into the reality of A David Dance Company.
A David Dance Company. I hope this will be an inspiration to you. I had an unusual dream in 1995. In the dream, I saw myself dancing in a church. (This was before liturgical and church dance groups exploded in America.) I was a bit unsure of the meaning of this dream due to the fact that I had never danced or even heard of dancing in ‘the church’. I suppose this was the beginning of a burning desire to dance that would never leave my heart. My life’s journey after this particular moment was filled with sharp turns (sometimes even uturns), detours and very long stop lights! If this is not making sense to you, just be patient. You’ll soon get the picture. After receiving a degree in chemistry, I knew that I no longer had a desire to conduct research and cure cancer! Dance was in me and I could not get it out of my mind. Well, years later, I found myself in a valley of decision, whether to apply for graduate school to obtain a Masters in Public Health or to open a dance studio. The studio won out.
A David Dance Company was created in August of 2003 – eight years after ‘the dream’. ADDC was created to nurture the dreams of others, to introduce children (and children at heart) to the exciting world of dance, expression and creativity. Through this endeavor, I have continued to encounter bumps in the road (on the job training on how to run a business), detours (making a lot of mistakes), long stop lights (limited funds) and uturns (questioning my decision to open and whether or not I should close). Not only has ADDC never closed its doors, we are now a growing business with a professional touring company, award winning junior dance troupe and have original dance programs funded by local and state grants!
I wanted to write this letter just for you. You, the student who is eager to learn and develop into the best dancer you can be; You, the parent who desires to utilize other opportunities to reinforce the self esteem, control and discipline which has already been instilled in your child; You, the community partner who aids ADDC in continuing its vital investment within the community and passing the torch of art appreciation; You, the curious onlooker in need of a motivational boost to achieve your own life’s goals and passions.
Thank you for your time and desire to learn about the vision God has given to me. I hope you have been inspired to become apart of ADDC as we continue to “Teach Dance While Building Character.”
Sincerely,
